About
This interactive workshop supports direct support professionals, nurses, and clinicians in helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities take medications in ways that fit their lives, preferences, and goals. Participants will explore common challenges people experience with medications, how to have respectful and person-centered conversations about medication use, and how to work together with the person, their family or chosen supports, and the care team. The session includes real-life case discussion, role-play scenarios that reflect everyday situations (such as not wanting to take medication or concerns about side effects), and hands-on practice creating individualized medication support plans that honor choice, understanding, and shared decision-making.
